Painting Tips: Caulking

The scenario is: you have a beautiful paint job on your walls that doesn’t need updating, and you don’t want to change the color. But the point where your mouldings and walls meet, needs to be caulked and you would like to avoid having to repaint.

In those cases, for my DIY’ers who want to tackle this themselves, here’s the simple solution that I employ!

Clean Up Dust

As with anything when it comes to painting, you want to begin with a clean surface. This can be as simple as wiping a rag along the trim.

Painter’s Tape

Tape along the mouldings, leaving a small gap where your caulk will seamlessly transition from trim to wall.

Run A Bead Of Caulk

With steady pressure, run a bead of caulk right at the gap you created between the trim and the painter’s tape.

Clean up or smooth excess caulk, with a rag or finger.

Remove The Tape!

Once you’ve finished caulking, smoothing it out, and cleaning up any excess, you can gently remove the painter’s tape from your wall. You should be left with a clean line of caulk and no need to repaint your wall at the same time!

*I do recommend using high quality painter’s tape. It adheres better, while also pulling away without removing paint along with it.

That’s it! Best of luck to you DIY’ers!
