Painting Tips: Ceilings

Ceilings are the worst, right? Necks get kinked, arms get tired, paint splatters onto walls. And those 10-12 footers? No one wants that DIY nightmare.

But, having your ceilings painted when your walls are painted, is actually to your home’s benefit, and here’s why.

  • Think of your ceilings as a 5th wall. Why neglect it?
A ceiling that goes unpainted when you get that fresh new paint on the walls, just looks dingy. But a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling, along with the walls, ensures that everything looks fresh and new. Ceilings are often overlooked when painting, so they sit around looking dingy and tired for much longer. Your home will thank you for freshly painted ceilings!

  • Cutting in. Yep, I said it. Those two most dreaded words in the world of paint. But it’s important to think on this one. No matter how good you are at cutting in, previous paint colors will more than likely show at that ceiling line. It’s the best time to straighten up the lines where the walls and ceiling meet. No one likes an uneven edge, and who wants to spend hard-earned money on newly painted walls, just to see the old paint peeking through at a sloppy ceiling edge? Having the ceiling painted at the same time, completely eliminates this issue, and you wind up with a clean, professional look.

I hope this gets you thinking about those ceilings, and helps to reframe your view of them when it comes to painting your home. Those 5th walls need attention! (Maybe we’ll get brave and talk about ceiling color soon!)

Happy painting!
